AI Guidance Framework

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a foundational capability for leading universities. For the University of Illinois System, effectively leveraging AI is essential to:

  • Advancing Teaching and Learning
  • Accelerating Research and Innovation
  • Enhancing Healthcare Delivery
  • Improving Operational Effectiveness

Our goal is not merely to avoid harm, but to enable excellence through responsible, ethical, and strategic AI use aligned with the values of a public research university.

Purpose

In July 2023, the University of Illinois System published its initial Generative AI Assessment and Recommendations Report in response to the rapid emergence of tools like ChatGPT. That foundational document established early principles and identified opportunities and risks across teaching, research, healthcare, and operations.

This AI Guidance Framework represents the next iteration of that guidance. As AI capabilities have expanded beyond text-based tools, the framework has been condensed and updated to provide vendor-agnostic, actionable guidance. Rather than prescribing specific technologies—which evolve rapidly—this framework establishes principles and practices that support innovation while managing risk.

Each university within the system should adapt this guidance to its local context, risk profile, and mission.
