Hogan 2010-2012

Michael J. Hogan had a four-decade career in public higher education before joining the University of Illinois as its 18th president in July 2010.

He came to Illinois from the University of Connecticut, where he was president. He previously served in senior administrative positions at The Ohio State University where he was executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences and at the University of Iowa where he was executive vice president and provost, and as a faculty member at Stony Brook University, Miami University, and the University of Texas. A noted historian, he is the author or editor of nine books and numerous scholarly articles and essays.

President Hogan addressed a state and university fiscal crisis caused by the national economic recession, recruited new senior leadership including the chancellors on the Springfield and Urbana campuses, and implemented organizational reforms and changes. He also launched a $100 million campaign for increased student financial aid.

He resigned the presidency in 2012 amid controversies over his organizational initiatives and faculty concerns about shared governance.
