In Observance of Memorial Day

May 25, 2018

As we celebrate Memorial Day 2018, let us remember and honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and freedoms.

I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the selfless service and sacrifices made by members of our armed forces, particularly those who are our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as their family members. On behalf of the university community, I thank you.

The University of Illinois has a long, recognized history of supporting our military students and veterans who return from duty to continue their educational pursuits at our universities, and the unique challenges they may face. From tuition assistance, to support services, to special courses, our commitment to these students is unwavering.

In Urbana-Champaign alone, we have nearly 350 students that are either veteran, reserve, or active duty military on campus. The university is consistently acknowledged as a military friendly school, notably home to the Chez Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education which provides specialized services to empower military-connected students to realize their potential through a world-class educational experience.

In addition to supporting our own campus communities, the leading-edge military research conducted by our faculty and students enhances our nation’s security.

At all three of our universities, we pride ourselves on our standard of excellence. Trust that the University of Illinois System will continue to be a leader in serving those that serve our country, and we honor them this Memorial Day and every day.
