2025-26 HIPAA Training Course
Why HIPAA Training?
This course helps University of Illinois employees refresh their understanding of protected health information (PHI) privacy and security protections. It also provides updates on changes to HIPAA regulations and potential risks. This training helps employees be successful in their job duties while protecting PHI and reducing risk to the university. This training is the keystone of the University of Illinois HIPAA Privacy and Security Training Program and is an annual requirement established by federal law. This year’s training is more in-depth than previous years and addresses all requirements of the federal regulations.
Who is Required to Take the HIPAA Training?
The University of Illinois’ HIPAA Privacy and Security Directive requires that all employees of healthcare covered components (HCC) complete an annual HIPAA Privacy and Security training. Most employees who are part of the Health Care Component (HCC) will be required to complete the annual HIPAA Training through the University of Illinois System Learning Management System (LMS). The HCC Liaisons and HR departments determine which employees are required to take the training. This requirement also applies to all employees, volunteers, researchers, trainees, and other persons who work under the direct control of an HCC and who perform the functions, activities, or services of either a covered entity or business associate, including access to anyone who accesses RedCap. Failure to complete the annual training may result in notification to departmental Deans and Directors and may result in the loss of network access until the training is completed.
Employees who have completed the UI Hospital Training, Miles Square and Division of Specialized Care for Children (DSCC) are not required to complete this training.
What Content is Covered?
The training program contains eight short courses, also referred to as modules. Each course takes about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Training can be paused and returned to as needed. Each of the courses has two to three questions that must be successfully answered to complete this requirement. Once the eight modules have been completed, the employee record will be automatically updated. A certification of completion will be provided.
