School is back in full swing. Roommates that were once just names on a sheet of paper are already becoming best friends. Classes have started, bringing the welcome bustle of students as they dash from one to the next.

The new school year has been especially energizing for me this year, my first as president. For one, there are more students this fall than last – nearly 73,000 combined on our three campuses – again proving the excellence and value that have made us one of the nation’s top public universities. And, our faculty and staff are rising to new heights in their research, scholarship, and creative works.

The return of our students is also a reminder of the limitless possibilities of education. University of Illinois graduates may someday cure diseases, revolutionize technology, or add a new classic to American literature. That potential serves as a call to me, and my faculty and staff colleagues, to steward the resources needed to pursue greatness.

We face financial challenges, but I want to make sure that cloud doesn’t overshadow our everyday achievements, from cutting-edge research to student, faculty, and staff excellence. So I’m celebrating those accomplishments – along with some of the plain old fun that rounds out the college experience – in my new blog, PrezRelease. Please check it out at

The blog, launched a week ago, has my name on it, but it’s really all about you – our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors. So if you have stories you think I should share, please email me at

I’m looking forward to a great year, and hope you are, too. And if you see the face at the top of my blog while you’re walking around campus, be sure to say hi.
