Michael Hites serves as Senior Associate Vice President for Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the University of Illinois System Offices.
In his role as CIO, Dr. Hites provides leadership, vision, and strategy for enterprise-wide information technology services in support of the academic and research missions of the University of Illinois System. In collaboration with the System's IT Leadership, he advocates for improved enterprise IT services and infrastructure delivered on the regional campuses and to reduce the cost of delivering these services by advancing shared vision, strategy, management, and accountability for enterprise-wide information technology services within the U of I System and its universities.
As Senior Associate Vice President for AITS, Dr. Hites oversees IT-related strategic planning and provides direction in the development of major administrative systems; leads efforts to maximize IT security through policy and proactive enforcement; and identifies opportunities for multi-campus collaboration, planning and reporting. These efforts include investigating new service models, refining existing services, establishing performance measures, and advancing cooperation and coordination. These efforts are aimed at providing infrastructure and services to support the mission of the University of Illinois System.
Dr. Hites has held various senior IT leadership positions of increasing leadership and responsibility before joining the U of I System as CIO and Senior Associate Vice President for AITS in 2008. Prior to that, he held the position of Vice President for Planning and Information Technology, Vice Provost for Information and Technological Services, and Chief Information Officer for New Mexico State University from 2003 to 2008 and Chief Technology Officer, Director of Computing and Network Services, Assistant Dean for Computing, and Research Assistant Professor for Illinois Institute of Technology from 2000-2003.
In addition to leading large IT organizations at three universities, Dr. Hites has previous NSF grants and has consulted for research universities and not-for-profit organizations. He led the development of an under-40 statewide leadership program and helped start a university-wide curriculum in interprofessional projects. He has taught courses in fluid mechanics and engineering measurements, supervised more than 25 multi-disciplinary student projects, and has been an invited speaker for conferences and corporate retreats. Dr. Hites has also led institutional research, library services and distance education services and has developed leadership program curricula and led strategic planning and IT planning for several universities. He is a former member of the SCUP Board and one of Computerworld’s Premier100 IT Leaders.
Dr. Hites holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona, a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
