Veterinary medicine students make house calls

Students in the College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana work on cats big and small.

An African lion with a broken tooth deserves -- demands -- a house call. So vet med students accompanied Professor Sandra Manfra Marretta, a dental disease specialist, to Brookfield Zoo in Chicago to observe oral surgery on Makonnen, a 500-pound lion. They also made a follow-up call when Marretta capped Makonnen's tooth.

The Zoological Pathology Program of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana provides services to Brookfield, Shedd Aquarium and Lincoln Park Zoo, diagnosing diseases and assisting in the health management of captive wildlife populations.

Illinois has one of only 28 colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S. The hospital's annual patient load, which ranges from small animals to horses and farm animals, provides abundant teaching opportunities for the 400 future veterinarians. Clinical specialists in a dozen fields use the latest equipment in veterinary medicine, including radiation therapy for animals with cancer; a 24-hour intensive care unit; and diagnostic imaging via nuclear medicine, ultrasound, radiology, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a recognized leader in teaching and scholarship and is known as an institution that creates knowledge and advances understanding.
