UIC surgeon restores vision

Ophthalmologists at the University of  Illinois Medical Center at Chicago are helping patients who have exhausted other medical options to see again.

Dr. Dimitri Azar, Field Chair of Ophthalmologic Research and professor and head of ophthalmology and visual sciences at UIC, led a team that performed four cornea replacements using a newly redesigned artificial cornea. Innovative medical programs at UIC contribute to the well-being of patients in Chicago and around the state.

In artificial cornea replacement, a plastic cornea is anchored to a hole in a donated cornea, the area that allows light into the eye. The artificial cornea is necessary when standard cornea transplants have failed, causing the implanted cornea to become opaque or invaded by blood vessels.

As the largest medical school in the country with over 2,600 culturally and economically diverse medical students and trainees, the University of Illinois College of Medicine provides outstanding scientific and clinical training in Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and Urbana. With nearly 4,000 alumni in the state, the College of Medicine graduates one in six Illinois physicians.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is an urban university intimately connected to its home in one of the nation’s largest and most diverse cities. A noted research center, particularly in urban affairs, medicine and the health sciences, UIC is committed to creating and disseminating new knowledge.
