FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Student fees and room-and-board rates set for next academic year
Increased operational, energy and food costs cited
CHICAGO, Ill. — The University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved fiscal year 2010 room-and-board rates and fees at its three campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield at its regular meeting in Chicago today. The new rates are effective beginning with 2009 summer school on each campus.
Undergraduate room-and-board at the Urbana-Champaign campus will rise for the 2009-10 school year. The amount depends upon the number of roommates a student has and the meal plan chosen. So, for example, an undergraduate in Urbana living in a standard double-occupancy residence hall room and choosing the 14-meal-per-week meal plan would see an increase of $243 per semester, from $4,099 in fiscal year 2009 to $4,342 in fiscal year 2010. (The 2010 university fiscal year begins on July 1, 2009 and ends June 30, 2010.)
At the Chicago campus, the cost for a student choosing the double-occupancy room and 14-meal plan will rise from $4,222 in 2009 to $4,560 in 2010 per semester, an increase of $338. At the Springfield campus, the cost per student for a double-occupancy room in Lincoln Residence Hall and a 14-meal plan will rise from $4,420 in 2009, to $4,600 in 2010, an increase of $180 per semester.
The increases are required to meet rising operational costs, including wages and salaries, energy, food and materials, and to provide for new programs, debt service and repair- and maintenance-reserve requirements.
Student fees for undergraduates at the Urbana-Champaign campus for 2010 will rise $71 to $1,368 per semester. These fees help cover maintenance and operation of the Illini Union, Assembly Hall, student recreational facilities, Career Services and the student health and counseling centers; overhead, debt service, repair and remodeling; facility renovation; and library-information technology expenses.
Fees for undergraduates at the University's Chicago campus for 2010 will rise $39 per semester to $1,431. These fees help cover the cost of operations and maintenance of the campus student unions, intercollegiate athletics, student programming, student councils and recreational facilities; the student health center; facility repair and renovation, debt service and overhead; and library-information technology expenses.
Fees for undergraduates at the University's Springfield campus for 2010 will rise $107 per semester to $806. These fees will cover intercollegiate athletics and student programming; debt service, repair and renovation, and overhead; the student health center and student counseling center; and facility renovation. New for fiscal year 2010 is a $75 per semester library-information technology fee.
The Board of Trustees will set tuition for the 2009-10 school year in the spring.
