NEWS RELEASE

March 26, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FY 2009 tuition and fees fact sheet

University of Illinois 2008-09 tuition and fees:

  • At UIC and UIUC, FY 2009 (July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009) tuition for new in-state entering students in general undergraduate degree programs will increase the equivalent of 3.66 percent annualized rate over the state-mandated four-year tuition guarantee.

  • The base tuition for new in-state undergraduate degree students will increase by:
    • $401 per semester at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to $4,621.
    • $353 per semester at the University of Illinois at Chicago to $4,065.
    • $428 per semester at the University of Illinois at Springfield to $3,608.

  • Students enrolled in certain, high-cost, high-demand curricula with higher starting wages for graduates, such as engineering and business, pay higher differential rates of tuition to help cover those costs.

  • All 2008-09 tuition rates will be effective in the 2008 fall semester.

  • Recommended room-and-board rates (standard double-occupancy residence hall and 14-meal plan weekly) per semester are:
    • At UIUC, an increase of $266 to $4,099.
    • At UIC, an increase of $313 to $4,222 per semester.
    • At UIS, an increase of $197 to $4,420.

  • Recommended fees per semester (set in consultation with students at each campus):
    • At UIUC, an increase of $92 to $1,494.
    • At UIC, an increase of $32 to $1,593.
    • At UIS, an increase of $58 to $932.

  • Student fees and room-and-board are not guaranteed and change year-to-year to cover inflation and higher costs, such as energy. Fees vary from campus to campus.

  • University financial experts caution that students and their families should differentiate between college "sticker price" and the real cost after financial aid and tax credits and deductions. In fall 2006, only 25 percent of UIS students paid full tuition and fees. At UIC, 34 percent paid full tuition and fees. In Urbana, 41 percent paid full tuition and fees.

  • Approximately two-thirds of the undergraduate students at UIS and seven-tenths of the undergraduate students at UIC and UIUC received some form of financial aid in FY 2007.
