FACT SHEET
May 17, 2007
University of Illinois 2007-08 tuition and fees:
- At UIC and UIUC, tuition for new in-state entering students in general undergraduate degree programs will increase the equivalent of 3.7 percent annualized rate over the state-mandated four-year tuition guarantee.
- The base tuition for new in-state undergraduate degree students will increase by:
- $366 per semester at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to $4,220.
- $322 per semester at the University of Illinois at Chicago to $3,712.
- $390 per semester at the University of Illinois at Springfield to $3,180.
- Students enrolled in certain, high-cost, high-demand curricula with higher starting wages for graduates, such as engineering and business, pay higher differential rates of tuition to help cover those costs.
- All 2007-08 tuition rates will be effective summer 2007.
- Recommended room-and-board rates (standard double-occupancy residence hall and 14-meal plan weekly) are:
- At UIUC, $3,833 per semester, an increase of $225.
- At UIC, $3,776 per semester, an increase of $180.
- At UIS, $4,223 per semester, an increase of $375.
- Recommended mandatory fees (set in consultation with students at each campus):
- At UIUC, $1,397 per semester, an increase of $268, of which $200 is a new library-information-technology fee.
- At UIC, $1,561 per semester, an increase of $77.
- At UIS, $951 per semester, an increase of $115.
- Student fees and room-and-board are not guaranteed and change year-to-year to cover inflation and higher costs, such as energy. Fees vary from campus to campus.
- University financial experts caution that students and their families should differentiate between college "sticker price" and the real cost after financial aid and tax credits and deductions. More than three-fifths of the undergraduate students at UIS and two-thirds of the students at UIC and UIUC receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, employment and loans. In fall 2005, only 36 percent of UIS students paid the full cost or "sticker price." At UIC, 46 percent of students paid full tuition and fees. At UIUC, 56 percent paid full tuition and fees.
- Tuition in the 2006-07 school year provided 14.6 percent of the University of Illinois budget. State taxes provided 19.3 percent of the instructional budget and another 10.5 percent of funds for employee benefits and pensions.
