George Halas.

American Professional Football Association formed

Representatives of 13 Midwestern football teams, including alumnus George Halas, met to form the American Professional Football Association, which would give birth to what is now the NFL. The next year Halas moved his team, the Decatur Staleys, to Chicago and renamed the team "The Bears."  Halas chose the colors orange and blue for the University of Illinois. Learn more...

ILLIAC.

ILLIAC I put into service

ILLIAC I (Illinois Automatic Computer) was the first computer to be built and owned solely by an educational institution. Consisting of 2,800 vacuum tubes that weighed 5 tons and containing more computing power than all of Bell Labs, ILLIAC I was used in 1957 to calculate the orbit of the Sputnik I satellite.
