Nobel Laureate, Urbana alumnus born

Edward Doisy, 1943 Nobel Laureate in medicine, was born on this date. Doisy received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the Urbana campus and taught at Washington University in St. Louis. He died in 1986. Learn more about him...

Sangamon State raises funds

Before Sangamon State University (the future UIS) could open, funds had to be raised. The Committee for Higher Education in Central Illinois began a drive to raise one million dollars to establish SSU. By February of 1970, the land for the University had been purchased, and the University opened to students that September.  Learn more...

First Star Party held

The first Star Party, an evening of astronomical observations, was organized by Professor Charles Schweighauser on the Springfield campus. Three decades later, he continues to plan these events each fall. Learn more about Star Parties...

Collegiate license plates available

In November of 1996, Secretary of State George Ryan unveiled collegiate license plates. Then as now, a portion of the purchase price of each plate goes to a scholarship fund for Illinois students. The first plate celebrated the Urbana campus, followed by Springfield, then Chicago. Presently, only Urbana and Chicago are available. Learn More…
