Hull-House
incorporated
Hull-House, Chicago's first social settlement, was incorporated
in March of 1895 by Jane Adams and Helen Gates Starr. Modeled after
the world's first social settlement in England, the house was the
site of events and classes and became a social hub for the neighborhood.
On March 5, 1963 the Hull House buildings were purchased by the
University of Illinois at Chicago. As part of the agreement, the
University preserved two of the original Hull House buildings, which
were declared a national landmark in 1967. Learn
