Lincoln
Hall opens
Lincoln Hall is dedicated to the study of the humanities and named
in honor of President Lincoln. The Land Grant Act, signed into law
by Lincoln in 1862, established the foundation for the University.

Illini Union opens
The Illini Union was built in 1939 and dedicated by First Lady Eleanor
Roosevelt as "a symbol of the democratic spirit of the University
of Illinois." The union was one of the first buildings on campus
built with federal funds.

Circle Campus opens
The temporary Navy Pier campus of the University was moved to a
permanent home at Harrison and Halsted streets in 1965 and renamed
"University of Illinois at Chicago Circle."

Higher education reorganization
Legislation calling for Sangamon State University to join the University
of Illinois was signed by Governor Jim Edgar as part of a reorganization
of higher education in the state.
