Illinois activates new high-speed intercampus data network
(November 8, 2007) More than two years of work came to fruition as the University of Illinois, with technical assistance from Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES), Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS), and the Chicago and Springfield campuses, activated the Intercampus Communications Network (ICCN). The ICCN is a high-speed data network that connects all three University campuses – Urbana, Chicago, and Springfield – and offers access to bandwidth orders of magnitude greater than before for only a marginal cost increase.

(November 5, 2007) The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry is using a computer program to find the perfect spot in the mouth to place dental implants.

New Book Explores Internet Use and Society
(November 5, 2007) Low levels of Internet use among minorities and the poor will limit their earning ability and participation in society if public policy does not promote technological access and skills, according to a new book co-authored by a researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Researchers work out obstacles to exercise for people with disabilities
(November 7, 2007) Some 50 million Americans live with disabilities — a number that grows as the population ages. Many might enjoy longer and healthier lives if regular exercise were part of their daily routine. But for the vast majority, that is not the case, usually because regular exercise programs simply are not an option. Enter UIC’s Center on Recreational Technologies and Exercise Physiology for people with disabilities, which just received a $4.75 million federal grant to continue its work for another five years.

Springfield Campus Good Works

Barbara Burkhardt named University Scholar for 2007
(November 7, 2007) Barbara Burkhardt, associate professor of English at the University of Illinois at Springfield, has been named University Scholar for 2007-2008. She is one of 13 faculty members, and the only one from UIS, chosen for this award honoring and rewarding outstanding teachers and scholars at the three U of I campuses.

UIS schedules Sunday Star Party for people with disabilities
(October 25, 2007) The University of Illinois at Springfield will hold a special Star Party for people with disabilities on Sunday evening, November 18, at 8 p.m., weather permitting, in the UIS observatory. The Star Party is free, but reservations are required. The featured object for viewing will be the moon.
