Odd protein interaction guides development of olfactory system
(October 29, 2007) Scientists have discovered a strange mechanism for the development of the fruit fly antennal lobe, an intricate structure that converts the chaotic stew of odors in the environment into discrete signals in the brain.

Scientists discover new way to make water
(October 31, 2007) In a familiar high-school chemistry demonstration, an instructor first uses electricity to split liquid water into its constituent gases, hydrogen and oxygen. Then, by combining the two gases and igniting them with a spark, the instructor changes the gases back into water with a loud pop. Scientists at the University of Illinois have discovered a new way to make water, and without the pop. Not only can they make water from unlikely starting materials, such as alcohols, their work could also lead to better catalysts and less expensive fuel cells.

Illinois professor to receive Presidential Early Career Award
(November 1, 2007) Carlos Pantano, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois, is among 58 young researchers named as recipients of the 2006 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers.

(November 1, 2007) Designers and researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago are producing an information system to explain medical bills and financial assistance programs to patients of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services.

(October 26, 2007) Strong gusts of wind swept over the lake and fields on a recent Saturday as Dr. Michael Lemke guided a group tour near Thompson Lake in western Illinois. Though the shallow waters are just starting to gain the appearance of a lake, the land’s new look is a vast improvement from the previous decades of farmland.

UI President Speaks to UIS Community about Leadership
(November 1, 2007) B. Joseph White said he first began to think about writing a book about leadership while he served as a dean at the University of Michigan, when the faculty held a softball game of the "Reptiles" versus the "Mammals." White eventually applied that concept of reptiles and mammals to types of people and, ultimately, leadership.
