April 1 -- UIC Chancellor and Vice President search begins
To members of the UIC campus community,
I am pleased to announce the formation of a campus committee to lead the search for the next Chancellor and Vice President for the University of Illinois at Chicago, with the intention of having the chancellor on board for the start of the next spring semester in January 2015.
I commend the campus Senate for assembling the search committee at this busy time of the year and thank physiology and biophysics Professor Mrinalini “Meena” Rao for agreeing to serve as committee chair. Dr. Rao is a long-serving member of the faculty, former vice president for academic affairs, respected by her colleagues and students, and is someone I am very comfortable working with on such an important project. Meena brings energy and enthusiasm to her work, and the search process will benefit because of her involvement.
The other members of the committee include:
Deans and Directors
Jerry Krishnan, associate vice president for population health sciences, University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System
Beth Richie, director, Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs
Terri Weaver, dean, College of Nursing
Jonathan Art, College of Medicine
Benet DeBerry-Spence, College of Business Administration
Stephen Engelmann, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Timothy Erickson, College of Medicine
David Hilbert, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Abolfazl (Kouros) Mohammadian, College of Engineering
Patricia O’Brien, Jane Addams College of Social Work
Darryl Pendleton, College of Dentistry
Maria (Nena) De Los Angeles Torres, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Lisa Yun Lee, College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts
Stephanie Whitaker, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Margaret Mesta, College of Medicine
Abhinav Reddy, representing UIC undergraduate students
Joanna Thompson, representing UIC graduate students
Members of University-related organizations and the community
Kerl (Kal) LaJeune, representing UIC alumni
Kay Schwichtenberg, representing the University of Illinois Foundation
Raul Raymundo, representing the Chicago community
Assisting the committee will be Mike Devocelle, special assistant to the president; Jami Painter, assistant vice president of Human Resources; and an executive search firm, still to be determined.
A website for the Chicago campus chancellor and vice president search has been established and can be found at www.uillinois.edu/searches/UICchancellor. The website will include links to core information about the campus and search information.
Because input from all campus stakeholders is essential, the committee will also host town hall-style meetings where our faculty, students, staff and others may voice their suggestions and opinions.
I will meet regularly with the search committee, beginning this month, and will keep the University's Board of Trustees informed. I will interview the finalists, and then make a recommendation to the trustees next fall. Again, my goal, shared by the board, is to have an exceptional, experienced leader in higher education as the next chancellor and vice president of the Chicago campus in time for the spring 2015 semester.
The selection of the next chancellor for Chicago is potentially the most important undertaking for this campus that members of the search committee and I will have during this calendar year. We look forward to this important opportunity and to working with all of you.

Bryan Becker and Peg O'Donoghue were appointed by the president in April but were replaced when they left the university.
