UIC Library's Daley Collection, Chicago, July 24, 2013
U of I Board of Trustees Chairman Christopher Kennedy, President Robert Easter, UIC Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, Chicago dignitaries, and family friends took part in the opening celebration for the Richard J. Daley Collection at the UIC library.
The Richard J. Daley Collection, a local variation of a Presidential Library, includes papers, awards, photos and other memorabilia from Daley's six terms as mayor, from 1955 to 1976. His widow, Eleanor Daley, made the donation to the University after his death in order to make the materials available at the institution that he considered one of his greatest achievements.
Among the family members present at the celebration were late mayor’s children – John Daley and his wife Mary Lou; Michael Daley and his wife Nancy; Richard M. Daley; Bill Daley (left, with the president) and his wife Bernadette Keller; Patricia Daley Martino and her husband Peter; and Mary Carol Vanecko and her husband Robert. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (shown above with President Easter and Chairman Kennedy) also attended.
The Daley Collection is housed in the Richard J. Daley Library, named for the former mayor. Patrons have access to more than 2.2 million volumes and 30,000 current journal titles. The library serves nine UIC colleges.
