Highlights
- UIC's Mile Square Health Center serves Chicago's Near West Side, an economically challenged urban community. The Center received a $12 million grant in 2010 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to build a new facility in the Illinois Medical District and improve access to primary care including in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, ob/gyn, midwifery, mental health and dentistry.
- University of Illinois Extension is the flagship outreach effort of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, offering educational programs to residents of all of Illinois’ 102 counties – and far beyond. More than 2 ½ million Illinois residents take part in Extension programs each year.
- The Resource Center for Autism and Developmental Delays at UIC fosters early intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. An extensive lending library of books, software, games, home teaching kits and visual supports is open to the public, free of charge.
- The Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS is the policy center educates citizens on public affairs issues and provides leadership and professional development programs.
- UIC College of Dentistry was recognized by the American Dental Association Foundation for the student-run clinic at Goldie's Place. The clinic provides dental support to people who are homeless on Chicago's North Side.
- Faculty and Extension educators at Urbana-Champaign are helping to teach people in developing countries new skills through the Scientific Animations WIthout Borders initiative.
- A 101-bed pediatric hospital opened in the summer of 2011 on UIC's campus. The center will serve patients from around the state with 10 centers of excellence.
- Urbana-Champaign has five National Resource Centers that support curricula, library collections and conferences, and provide outreach to local and regional K-12 educators related to their world region.
