campusThe University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is inviting nominations and applications for the position of Chancellor.

The Chancellor is the Executive Officer of UIC and reports to the President of the University of Illinois. UIC seeks a proven leader who will aggressively promote continued development of its academic programs, research productivity and national reputation of excellence built upon a commitment to access, diversity and full engagement with the people, institutions and communities of Chicago. With a nearly 150 year tradition of academic excellence, UIC is one of the three campuses of the University of Illinois. UIC has, over the past twenty-five years, become one of the top fifty research universities in the United States. The largest university in Chicago, UIC has a $1.65 billion FY 2008 operating budget. It has a diverse student population of more than 25,000 students of whom almost 40 percent are professional or graduate students. UIC employs approximately 2,000 full-time faculty and over 11,000 full-time staff. It is comprised of more than 100 buildings on 250 acres just southwest of Chicago’s Loop and facilities for health sciences colleges in Rockford, Peoria and Urbana-Champaign.

UIC is inextricably tied to the life and culture of the city of Chicago. Through UIC’s Great Cities Commitment, faculty, staff and students throughout the University have worked to produce a leading national example of an engaged university. Partnering with government agencies, community organizations, businesses and the civic sector, UIC seeks to advance the construction of knowledge and the teaching of students, while improving the society and economy of Chicago and other urban areas throughout the world.

The Chancellor oversees a comprehensive institution comprised of 15 colleges and a major medical care system. UIC offers academic programs in the humanities, social and natural sciences, education and the arts and boasts an extensive range of professional schools, including six health sciences colleges, and colleges of art and architecture, business, education, engineering and social work. UIC faculty includes outstanding scholars who are members of national academies and winners of Guggenheim and MacArthur awards.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of relevant leadership experience and will most likely have an earned doctorate and achieved the rank of full professor. He/she will have a deep understanding of the special character of a public, research, urban, land-grant university and be personally committed to UIC’s mission of providing the broadest access to the highest levels of intellectual excellence within an engaged university. The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges facing a public urban research university that is part of a multi-ethnic community and engaged with many community medical, cultural, commercial, legal and social arenas.
