Sustainable brownfields

University of Illinois at Chicago A brownfield is a site where redevelopment could be complicated because of the presence of a hazardous substance. The US Environmental Protection Agency awarded UIC's Institute for Environmental Science and Policy a five-year, $750,000 grant to identify best management practices for redeveloping sites sustainably, gauge the benefits and get the information to the public and policymakers. The UIC research team of Susan Kaplan, Thomas Theis, Joshua Linn and Serap Erdal will work with Urbana campus researchers John Braden and Marilyn Ruiz and other collaborators to define what it means to turn a brownfield into a new green development in a way that sustains the site as eco-friendly — and the value of doing so. A website detailing best management practices will be among the first public offerings, along with an easy-to-use guidebook.
